How Hormones Change Your Curl, Wave and Coil Pattern at Every Stage of Life

The shape of the hair follicle, which determines whether hair grows straight, wavy, or coily, is not genetically fixed at birth and is not immutable thereafter. The body's hormonal environment continuously influences it. Androgens, estrogen, thyroid hormones, cortisol, and insulin each play documented roles in follicle geometry, keratin production, and hair texture. When these hormones shift, as they do at puberty, during pregnancy, after delivery, through perimenopause, and with thyroid or metabolic changes, the hair that grows from the follicle reflects that shift.
For Indian women navigating changes in curl pattern, this is the starting point most content skips entirely.

The Follicle Is Not Fixed

Your curl pattern, whether 2A waves or 4B coils, is determined by the shape of your hair follicle. Curly hair forms due to asymmetry of both the hair follicle and the keratin inside the hair shaft. Follicles that produce curly hair are asymmetrical, curved, and angled, which kink the hair as it first grows and maintain the curl as it continues.
