What Shrinkage Actually Is: The Science Behind It
The hair shaft is made of proteins (keratin)held together by three types of bonds: hydrogen, salt, and disulfide bonds. These bonds link together and play a major role in hair elasticity and strength. Hydrogen bonds can break once they come into contact with water or heat.
When your hair gets wet, those hydrogen bonds temporarily break, and the hair shaft becomes malleable -able to be reshaped. As it dries, the bonds reform in whatever position the hair naturally wants to return to. Methods to Show Your True Length, Without Heat
The following methods stretch curly and coily hair into a more elongated form by setting the hair in a stretched position while hydrogen bonds reform during drying. None eliminates shrinkage; they temporarily work with the hair's elastic structure to show more length while you manipulate it.
Braid-out and twist-out. The most reliable method for Indian conditions. Divide damp, product-applied hair into sections, braid or twist each section from root to end, leave overnight until completely dry, and release gently with fingers. The braid or twist holds the hair in an elongated S-pattern as the hydrogen bonds reform, producing stretched waves rather than tight coils. Pineapple stretching overnight. For those who want their second-day hair to show slightly more length, gathering hair loosely into a very high ponytail (the pineapple) before sleeping lets gravity gently elongate the curl pattern overnight without manipulation. Simple, no-product, and effective for moderate stretching on 3B and 3C hair types.
The India-Specific Consideration for All Stretching Methods
Every stretching method above depends on one critical factor: the hair must be completely dry before releasing.
In Indian monsoon conditions, this takes longer than in dry climates. Hair set in braids or bands that is released while still even slightly damp will immediately spring back toward maximum shrinkage the moment it meets the humid outdoor air, because the hydrogen bonds have not fully reformed in their stretched position. Release must happen only after the hair has dried completely, preferably indoors before stepping outside.
